What You Should Know About Audio Quality and File Sizes
Let's be upfront about how this works. Every video file has two tracks inside it — a video track and an audio track. When you convert to MP3, we're extracting that audio track and saving it in a format that plays on basically everything: phones, car stereos, old iPods gathering dust in a drawer, you name it.
Here's the thing about quality: the MP3 can only be as good as the source. If you're pulling audio from a high-quality YouTube music video, you'll get a great-sounding file. If the source is a grainy phone recording someone uploaded to TikTok, well, the audio will sound like a grainy phone recording. No converter can fix that.
In terms of file sizes, a 5-minute MP3 is usually around 5-8MB. That's tiny compared to video — the same 5 minutes of video could be 50-200MB depending on quality. So if all you need is the audio, you're saving a huge amount of storage. A full hour-long podcast as MP3 runs about 50-80MB, which is perfectly manageable on any device.
YouTube tends to give the best audio quality of all the platforms we support — typically 128-256 kbps. Instagram and TikTok compress their audio more since they're focused on short-form visual content, but for casual listening the quality is still perfectly fine. Start with the best source you can find
Official music videos and professionally produced content will always give you better audio than someone's phone recording. If the same song exists as an official upload and a fan recording, go with the official one.
YouTube gives the best audio
If the same content exists on multiple platforms, the YouTube version will almost always have better audio quality. YouTube uses higher bitrates than Instagram, TikTok, or Facebook.
Make sure the video is public
Our converter needs to be able to access the video. If it's private or age-restricted, it might not work. Quick test: try opening the video in an incognito browser window. If you can watch it there, we can convert it.
Shorter videos are faster
We support videos up to 15 minutes, but a 2-minute clip will process much faster than a 15-minute one. If you only need a specific part, check if there's a shorter clip of just that section.
